The Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) works around the world to design and implement high quality transport systems and policy solutions that make cities more livable, equitable, and sustainable.

Through our transport projects, policy advocacy, and research publications, we work to reduce carbon emissions, enhance social inclusion, and improve the quality of life for people in cities.
Heather Thompson is the Chief Executive Officer of ITDP. Previous to her appointment as CEO, Ms. Thompson has been involved with ITDP as a funder, serving on the Board of Directors, and as interim CEO. Ms. Thompson has focused her career on designing strategies for large-scale impact in the environmental non-profit sector, including writing strategies for many of the leading foundations and nonprofit organizations in the United States focused on climate change and environmental action. Previously, Ms. Thompson was co-founder and Vice President of Programs for ClimateWorks and Principal at California Environmental Associates. Ms. Thompson also serves on the Board of the Gehl Institute. Ms. Thompson has lived and worked abroad in China, the U.K., and Denmark. She holds a MSc in environmental economics from the University of York, U.K. and a B.S. in biological sciences from the University of California, San Diego.
