The electrification of urban bus fleets is considered an important element in the decarbonization of urban transport. It also helps to reduce local air pollution and increase the quality of life in urban areas. Several public and private bus operators have already committed to electrify their fleet in this decade. However, introduction of electric buses not only requires the procurement of e-buses but also the procurement of cost intensive charging infrastructure, planning the long term transition path from current conventional fleets and re-planning the operations and maintenance schedules. This presents decision-makers and bus operators in cities with a multitude of new challenges. To select the right technology, define the vehicle and charging infrastructure requirements and ensure optimum & reliable bus operation adequate for the local conditions, solid planning is the key. Software based planning and optimization tools can help all stakeholders involved to better understand the key steps for electrifying their bus fleets successfully.
